Water is one important component in human life, therefore consume clean water becomes imperative factor in itself. Then how do I know if a water supply or not?
Not all regions in Indonesia especially in Jakarta have good water quality when water is used for a variety of activities and one of them to drink. Therefore, cleanliness of the water you drink will affect one's health.
"Visually, the public can find out if water is consumed or not feasible, either of microorganisms or of chemical compounds such as heavy metals," said Dr R Budi Haryanto, SKM, M. Kes, MSc in event Unilever Pureit: Ready to Drink Water purifier Technology Shielded from harmful germs cause disease at Planet Hollywood on Tuesday (19/10/2010).
To find out Budi advised people to take water and then viewed clarity, smell it to know whether or not smell and lick it to know the taste or not. Potable water should be clear in color, no smell and no taste.
As for chemical compounds such as heavy metals will usually look and smell. For example, for metallic Fe (iron) or manganese, so that water collected will look like there is a layer of glass or oil on it. If left in place for some time will arise brown sediment on the outskirts of the bucket or pan. But for chemicals such as arsenic compounds are generally colorless.
Water used by the public for daily activities and also drinking water also varies, there is a use or in shallow ground water and piped water.
"Ground water is used by people in Jakarta are generally shallow, whereas the lower depths, the quality is less and less good. This is because the soil and geology is still unstable and allow the contamination to the soil surface," says environmental health experts from the Faculty of Public Health University of Indonesia .
As for the water piped raw materials used are usually derived from river water. As we all know the current load of the river water is quite heavy because of the upper reaches has been polluted by domestic sewage, industrial and forest pesticides, so the filtration performance even more severe.
Based on a survey conducted by Unilever in cooperation with the Sucofindo in 2009 in 300 groundwater sources in Greater Jakarta and Bandung, 48 percent found that the result of ground water in Greater Jakarta and Bandung contains coliform bacteria, and 50 percent of ground water has a low pH level and beyond reasonable threshold.
"Bacteria, viruses, protozoa that contaminate the water can cause disease mostly associated with stomach like diarrhea. While the chemical compounds contained in water such as iron, manganese or lead will cause chronic or long-term illness such as kidney damage, lowered IQ, anemia to reproductive disorders, "he said.
Budi said that these chemical compounds generally have a target different organs, there is in the kidney, bone or central nervous system. Because of contamination of this chemical compound will generally only seen after long period of time. As for the bacterial contamination is generally seen in the short term.
