Of the various kinds of health risks that can be experienced by children, the problem of dehydration or loss of body fluids are rarely a major concern of parents when their children sick. Though silenced dehydration can be fatal.
Parents are usually less sensitive to the problem of dehydration because they think the baby can not be affected by dehydration. These thoughts arise because the baby is always given to drink milk regularly.
But according to research conducted by St. John's Medical College in Bangalore, India, and published in Indian Journal of Pediatrics, exclusive breastfeeding can even cause dehydration in infants.
1. Excessive thirst Therefore, it is important to know the signs of dehydration in infants. Reporting from the LIVESTRONG, Tuesday (10/19/2010), here are some symptoms when the infant is dehydrated :
It's a bit obvious, but if the baby is less liquid naturally he will feel the urge to drink more. Babies may cry until given a bottle and then continue to suck until all the water, milk or juice runs out. This is a sign of mild and moderate dehydration.
2. Is listless and unhealthy
Babies who looked lethargic and may suffer serious dehydration should be given fluids and taken to a doctor immediately. Lethargy in babies include lack of energy, desire to lie down all day and lack of emotion.
3. Loss of skin elasticity
Dehydration in infants can cause loss of skin elasticity. If you try to gently pinch the skin of your child and do not quickly return to its normal position, this could be a sign of dehydration. This happens because not enough water to reach the skin.
4. Dry mouth and sticky
Babies who are not properly dehydrated often show symptoms of dry mouth. This can be accompanied by a white drool or foam at the corner of baby's mouth.
5. Dry Diapers
Baby diaper dry for more than a few hours and certainly should not be dry for more than 5 or 6 hours. This can happen when a baby is dehydration because the body uses less liquid to drink and also just spend a little liquid. Constipation is a symptom similar, although this may be the result of other things such as poor appetite or slow digestive system.
