People sometimes mistakenly equate antiseptics and disinfectants. Indeed, although both can kill microorganisms, but in fact both are used for different things.
But the disinfectant is also sometimes used as an antiseptic for humans as long as the dose is appropriate because if the dose is too high can make the poisoning to death.
The content contained within it has a different role so that its application should be precise so as not to cause any effect.
The workings of antiseptics and disinfectants are the same, namely compounds contained in them will penetrate the cell walls of organisms such as bacteria.
Later the inner workings of the cell depends on the compound contained in such an antiseptic and disinfectant. In general these compounds interfere with cell metabolism or alter the permeability of cell walls of microorganisms.
Excerpted from the LIVESTRONG, Saturday (30/10/2010) there are some differences between the antiseptic disinfectant, namely:
AntisepticThese chemicals are applied to the skin use a life or a specific tissue to prevent infection and generally not very toxic, so it is not harmful to the skin.Antiseptics are usually used when someone is washing their hands or before performing surgery.Antiseptic usually contain alcohol, chlorhexidine and anilides.
Yet there are some microorganisms that do not respond to all antiseptic and disinfectant, it is usually because these microorganisms are resistant or mutate.
Therefore the first thing that must be understood before using antiseptics or disinfectants is knowing what you want to eradicate microorganisms and in which microorganisms are grown. This is to prevent the occurrence of side effects that may be harmful or dangerous body.
