A study conducted by experts from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Maryland prove the fish could prevent Age-Related Muscular Disease (AMD) or diseases of the eye due to the aging process. The study included 2400 volunteers aged 65-84 years.

As a result, the risk for experiencing AMD reduced in volunteers who ate fatty fish 2 times a week or more. Factors that differentiate with other volunteers is a high intake of omega 3 fish.

"These findings reinforce the results of previous studies that show omega-3 fatty acids in fish and shellfish could prevent AMD," said one researcher, Sheila K. West, PhD, as quoted from MedicalNewsToday, Friday (04/12/2010).

AMD is characterized by damage to retinal cells, which can end in blindness. An estimated 240,000 people in the UK of all ages suffering from this disease, either due to aging which is a major factor as well as other factors such as ultraviolet radiation.
